Foundations of Clinical Psychology

A new MPhil course in the Department of Psychiatry.

A brand new course for students wishing to pursue training with leaders in Clinical Psychology and develop an introductory understanding of the knowledge and skills of the scientist-practitioner Clinical Psychologist.

While graduates will not qualify as practitioner psychologists, the course provides the ideal foundation for future specialisation in Clinical Psychology or further research via PhD or the DClinPsych.

The course combines formal teaching with hands-on research and a clinically relevant work placement, providing learning and experience at a foundational level for those considering further training in a BPS-accredited DClinPsych programme.

The programme reflects relevant and up-to-date psychological knowledge and skills and promotes contemporary psychological practice and research. Students will become critical consumers of research and the emerging knowledge base.

Our approach to evidence-based therapies, holistic care, and rigorous psychological practice is linked to lifespan research and a sophisticated understanding of the complexity of mental health factors.

The programme recognises the importance of societal and cultural factors. It expects students to develop an identity as “system leaders” who implement policies grounded in psychologically informed, evidence-based prevention for the entire population and tackle mental health, well-being, and access to high-quality care inequalities.

“The course provides the ideal foundation for future specialisation in Clinical Psychology.”
